Hany El-Banna (Arabic: هاني البنا) is a British-Egyptian medical doctor, humanitarian, and charity leader. He is best known as the founder of Islamic Relief Worldwide, one of the largest independent international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) focused on humanitarian aid and development. El-Banna has dedicated his career to addressing poverty, suffering, and injustice globally, particularly in Muslim communities and conflict zones.
Early Life and Education
Hany El-Banna was born in Egypt. He pursued his medical education at the University of Alexandria, where he graduated with a degree in medicine. Following his medical studies, he moved to the United Kingdom, where he later earned a PhD in Medical Sciences from the University of Edinburgh. His medical background has informed his approach to public health and humanitarian interventions throughout his career.
Founding Islamic Relief Worldwide
In 1984, while still a student in the UK, El-Banna founded Islamic Relief Worldwide from his home in Birmingham. The organisation was established in response to the devastating famine in Sudan and Ethiopia, aiming to provide aid and relief to those affected. Under his leadership, Islamic Relief grew from a small, volunteer-led initiative into a global organisation with a presence in over 40 countries, providing emergency relief, long-term development projects, and advocacy on issues like poverty, climate change, and disaster preparedness. He served as the Chief Executive Officer of Islamic Relief until 2008.
