Born on September 15, 1945, in Bersenbrück, Germany, Hans-Gert Pöttering grew up in a post-World War II era that significantly shaped his pro-European views. He earned his doctorate in political science from the University of Bonn in 1974, specializing in the history of the European Community. Political Career
Pöttering's political career began with his election to the European Parliament in 1979, the first direct elections for the institution. He remained a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for 35 years, until 2014, making him one of the longest-serving MEPs.
