Hans van Mierlo (21 August 1931 – 11 March 2010) was a Dutch politician, journalist, and author. He is best known as a co‑founder and long‑time leader of the social‑liberal political party Democrats 66 (D66) and for serving as a member of the Dutch House of Representatives, a minister in two Dutch cabinets, and a Member of the European Parliament.

Born in Enschede, Netherlands, van Mierlo began his career as a journalist, working for De Tijd and later for the broadcasting organization VARA. In 1966 he co‑founded Democrats 66, a party that sought to modernize Dutch politics through electoral reform, increased political transparency, and a progressive liberal agenda. He served as D66’s first party leader (1966–1973) and again from 1986 to 1994.

Van Mierlo held several governmental positions:

  • Minister of Defense in the cabinet of Prime Minister Joop den Uyl (1973–1977).
  • Minister of Foreign Affairs in the cabinet of Prime Minister Wim Kok (1994–1998).

He was elected to the European Parliament in 1979 and served until 1984, after which he returned to Dutch national politics. Throughout his career, van Mierlo advocated for European integration, civil liberties, and educational reform. He retired from active politics in 2002 and died in 2010 in Delft.
