Hanoi Opera House

Definition
The Hanoi Opera House (Vietnamese: Nhà hát lớn Hà Nội) is a historic opera house and performance venue located in the capital city of Vietnam, Hanoi. It serves as a cultural venue for theatrical, musical, and dance productions.

Overview
Constructed during the French colonial period, the Hanoi Opera House was inaugurated in 1911. It was modeled after the Palais Garnier in Paris and is situated on Tràng Tiền Square in the French Quarter of Hanoi. The building is administered by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and functions as a principal stage for the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet as well as for a variety of national and international performances.

Etymology/Origin
The name combines “Hanoi,” the capital city of Vietnam, with “Opera House,” a term derived from the Italian opera meaning “work” and used internationally to denote a theater dedicated primarily to opera and other performing arts. The Vietnamese designation Nhà hát lớn translates literally as “large theater,” reflecting its status as the city’s principal performance hall.
