Hannu Aravirta

Hannu Aravirta (born July 26, 1953) is a Finnish former professional ice hockey player and coach. Known primarily for his extensive coaching career, particularly with the Finnish men's national ice hockey team, he is one of the most recognized figures in Finnish ice hockey history.

Playing Career

Aravirta played as a forward during his professional career in the SM-liiga, Finland's top-tier ice hockey league. He represented several clubs, including SaiPa, Tappara, Kärpät, and HIFK, between 1973 and 1980. While not a star player, he was a solid contributor and gained valuable experience that would later inform his coaching philosophy.

Coaching Career

Aravirta's coaching career began in the 1980s and quickly rose through the ranks, establishing him as one of Finland's most successful coaches.

Club Coaching

He coached numerous teams in the SM-liiga, achieving significant success:

  • JYP: Aravirta led JYP to two SM-liiga silver medals in 1989 and 1992.
  • HIFK: He coached HIFK during multiple stints.
  • Kärpät: He guided Kärpät to back-to-back Finnish championships (Kanada-malja) in 2004 and 2005, a significant achievement for the Oulu-based club.
  • Jokerit, Pelicans, Espoo Blues: Other notable SM-liiga clubs he coached. Aravirta also had coaching stints abroad, including with MODO Hockey in the Swedish Elitserien and EHC Olten in Switzerland.

Aravirta's most prominent role was as the head coach of the Finland men's national ice hockey team (Leijonat) from 1998 to 2003. During his tenure, Finland achieved remarkable consistency on the international stage, securing multiple medals but famously missing out on a gold:

  • 1998 Winter Olympics (Nagano): As an assistant coach, he contributed to Finland's bronze medal.
  • 1999 World Championships: Silver medal.
  • 2000 World Championships: Silver medal.

  • 2002 World Championships: Bronze medal. Due to his teams consistently reaching the final but often settling for silver during the World Championships, he earned the affectionate nickname "Silver Hannu" among Finnish fans and media.
