Operated by China Railway Shanghai Group, the station serves as an important node on several conventional (non‑high‑speed) rail lines, including the Shanghai–Hangzhou Railway, the Hangzhou–Fuyang Railway, and the Zhejiang–Jiangxi Railway.
History
The original Hangzhou railway station was opened in 1906 as part of the early development of the Shanghai–Hangzhou railway line. The facility has undergone multiple expansions and renovations, most notably in the 1990s and again in the early 2010s, to accommodate increasing passenger volumes and to improve service standards. The current main station building, characterized by a modernist façade with a metal-and-glass structure, was completed in 2013.

The station comprises several passenger halls, ticketing counters, and waiting areas. It has a total of 13 passenger platforms (including island platforms) serving 22 tracks. Amenities include accessible facilities for persons with disabilities, retail outlets, dining options, and a dedicated VIP lounge. Hangzhou railway station primarily handles conventional speed trains (K, T, and some Z series) connecting Hangzhou with major cities such as Shanghai, Nanjing, Beijing, and Chengdu. While high‑speed services (CRH) are predominantly operated from Hangzhou East railway station, some high‑speed trains also call at Hangzhou railway station on select routes. The station processes an average of over 100,000 passengers per day, with peak volumes occurring during the Chinese New Year travel period.
Transportation Connections
The station is integrated with Hangzhou’s urban transit network. It is served by multiple bus routes, and a dedicated metro station on Line 1 of the Hangzhou Metro opened in 2012, providing direct subway access to the city centre and other key districts. Taxi stands and ride‑hailing services are available at the station exits.
Future Developments
Plans announced by the municipal government include further expansion of the station’s concourse area and the addition of automated ticketing machines to enhance passenger flow.
