The Hamburg Cyclassics, currently known for sponsorship reasons as the Vattenfall Cyclassics and more recently as the EuroEyes Hamburg Cyclassics, is a professional one‑day road cycling race held annually in and around Hamburg, Germany. It is part of the UCI WorldTour, the top tier of men's professional road cycling, and is one of the few WorldTour events that takes place in Germany.
History
The inaugural edition of the race was held on 30 August 1996. It was created to provide a German one‑day classic that could complement the country’s stage races such as the Deutschland Tour. Since its inception, the race has been organized by the Hamburg Cycling Association (Hamburger Radverein) in cooperation with the city of Hamburg and various commercial sponsors.
Course
The race typically covers a distance of approximately 220–250 kilometres, featuring a relatively flat profile with a series of short, sharp climbs known as the “Hamburg Hills.” The most notable of these is the “Rund um die Alster” circuit, a repeated loop that includes a climb on the steep Alster hill. The route often incorporates several laps of a city circuit that showcases Hamburg’s harbour, the Elbe River, and the historic Speicherstadt district, finishing on a sprint‑friendly flat stretch.
Race Characteristics
Due to its flat terrain, the Hamburg Cyclassics is generally considered a sprinters’ race, though breakaways and selective riding on the short climbs can influence the outcome. The race has been won multiple times by prominent sprinters, including Erik Zabel (four victories), Alessandro Petacchi, and Arnaud Démare. Occasionally, riders with strong endurance and tactical acumen succeed from late‑race attacks.
WorldTour Status
The event was incorporated into the UCI ProTour (now UCI WorldTour) in 2005, elevating its status and guaranteeing participation by all UCI WorldTeams. Its inclusion has contributed to increased international media coverage and a higher caliber of competing riders.
