Halyna Levytska

Halyna Levytska (January 23, 1901 – December 25, 1949) was a Ukrainian pianist and music educator who played a significant role in the musical culture of Western Ukraine during the early to mid-20th century.

Early Life and Education Levytska was born in Pruchnik (now in Poland) into a family of the Ukrainian intelligentsia. Her father, Lev Levytsky, was a prominent lawyer and social activist. She received her professional musical training at the Vienna Academy of Music, where she studied under the Austrian pianist Paul Weingarten. She graduated from the academy in 1920.

Performance Career Following her education, Levytska established herself as a concert pianist. During the 1920s and 1930s, she performed extensively across Central and Eastern Europe, including recitals in Vienna, Prague, Warsaw, and Lviv. Her repertoire was diverse, encompassing standard classical works alongside pieces by contemporary Ukrainian composers, such as Mykola Lysenko and Lev Revutsky, thereby promoting Ukrainian musical culture on the international stage.

Pedagogical Work Levytska contributed significantly to music education in Lviv. She served as a professor at the Mykola Lysenko Higher Institute of Music. Following the reorganization of educational institutions under Soviet administration, she became a professor at the Lviv State Conservatory (now the Lviv National Musical Academy). Her pedagogical approach influenced a generation of Ukrainian pianists.

Personal Life and Context She was married to Ivan Krushelnytsky, a Ukrainian poet and artist. Her life was profoundly affected by the political instability of the era. In 1934, during the Soviet repressions known as the Great Purge, her husband was executed by Soviet authorities in Kyiv. Despite these personal tragedies and the shifting political borders of Galicia, Levytska remained in Lviv and continued her artistic and educational activities until her death in 1949. Her daughter, Maria Krushelnytska, also became a recognized pianist and professor.
