Early Life and Education
Born Halyna Androsovych in Horodets, Ukrainian SSR (now Ukraine), Hutchins grew up on a Soviet military base in the Arctic Circle and later studied economics and journalism at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, graduating with a bachelor's degree. She worked as an investigative journalist with British documentary productions in Europe before immigrating to the United States.In the U.S., Hutchins pursued her passion for filmmaking, graduating from the American Film Institute Conservatory's master's program in cinematography in 2015. During her studies, she was mentored by cinematographer Stephen Lighthill.
Career
Hutchins quickly established herself as a rising talent in the independent film industry. She was known for her visually striking work and her dedication to the craft. Her filmography included a range of independent features, short films, and documentaries.Notable works include:
- Archenemy (2020) – a superhero action-thriller directed by Adam Egypt Mortimer, which premiered at the Sitges Film Festival.
- Darlin' (2019) – a horror film directed by Pollyanna McIntosh.
- Blindfire (2020) – a crime drama.
- The Mad Hatter (2021) – a horror film.
She was also recognized as a "rising star" by the American Society of Cinematographers in 2019.
Death
On October 21, 2021, Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot on the set of the Western film Rust near Santa Fe, New Mexico. During a rehearsal, a prop gun being held by actor Alec Baldwin discharged a live round, striking Hutchins and director Joel Souza. Hutchins was airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, where she was pronounced dead. Joel Souza was injured but survived.The incident led to widespread scrutiny of firearms safety protocols in the film industry and prompted numerous investigations. It reignited discussions about the use of live ammunition on film sets and the overall safety culture within Hollywood productions. Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed were later charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with her death.
