Etymology/Origin
The name “Hajime” (はじめ, 始め) is a common Japanese given name meaning “beginning” or “first”. The surname “Isayama” (伊勢山) combines the characters 伊 (I), often associated with the Ise region, and 山 (yama), meaning “mountain”. Together, the name does not convey a specific meaning beyond typical Japanese naming conventions.

Characteristics

  • Artistic Style: Isayama’s drawing style is noted for its stark line work, dynamic panel composition, and a focus on gritty, realistic depictions of human anatomy and facial expressions, especially in moments of intense emotional stress.
  • Narrative Themes: His storytelling frequently explores existential dread, the fragility of civilization, moral ambiguity, and the cyclical nature of conflict. Attack on Titan incorporates themes of freedom versus oppression, the consequences of warfare, and the impact of trauma on individuals and societies.
  • World‑building: Isayama constructs a detailed, hierarchical world with distinct political structures, military organizations, and a complex mythos surrounding the Titans, employing a blend of mystery and gradual revelation to maintain suspense.
  • Influences: He has cited works such as Berserk by Kentaro Miura and various Western horror and science‑fiction media as influences on his narrative and visual approach.
