Hajdúszoboszló District (Hungarian: Hajdúszoboszlói járás) is an administrative district (járás) of Hajdú-Bihar County in the Northern Great Plain region of eastern Hungary. The district’s administrative centre is the town of Hajdúszoboszló, which is also the largest settlement within the district.
Geography
The district lies in the central‑eastern part of Hajdú‑Bihar County and borders the districts of Debrecen, Derecske, Püspökladány, and Balmazújváros. It covers an area of approximately 378 km² (146 sq mi), characterized by flat terrain of the Great Hungarian Plain, with a mixture of agricultural land, water bodies, and forested areas.
Population
According to the 2011 Hungarian census, Hajdúszoboszló District had a population of roughly 43,000 inhabitants, resulting in a population density of about 114 inhabitants per square kilometre. The demographic composition is predominantly ethnic Hungarian, with small minorities of Roma and other groups.
Administrative Subdivisions
The district comprises a total of 12 municipalities: 2 towns and 10 villages. The towns are:
- Hajdúszoboszló (district seat)
- Balmazújváros (partial jurisdiction, with the majority of the town belonging to an adjacent district)
The villages include Almászállás, Balmazújváros (part), Bököny, Dényő, Kács, Ruzsa, Szentpéterszeg, Tiszacsege, Vekerd, and Zsámbok.
Economy
The district’s economy is anchored in agriculture, with cereal production, vegetable cultivation, and livestock farming being prominent activities. Hajdúszoboszló town is internationally known for its spa and tourism industry; the "Thermal Bath of Hajdúszoboszló" attracts domestic and foreign visitors, contributing significantly to the local service sector.
History
The present‑day district structure was established during the 2013 administrative reform in Hungary, which reduced the number of districts nationwide. Historically, the area has been part of the historical region of Hajdú, known for the hajdú (irregular soldiers) settlements of the 16th–18th centuries. The town of Hajdúszoboszló itself received town status in 1900 and developed as a spa destination in the 20th century.
Transport
The district is served by road and rail networks linking it to Debrecen, the county capital, and other major cities. National Road 44 passes through the district, and the Hajdúszoboszló railway station lies on the line connecting Debrecen and Nyíregyháza.
Education and Culture
Educational institutions in the district include primary schools, secondary schools, and vocational training centres, most of which are located in Hajdúszoboszló. Cultural facilities comprise a local history museum, libraries, and community centres that host events reflecting the traditions of the Hajdú region.
