Hailakandi Airfield was a military airfield located near Hailakandi in the state of Assam, India. It served as a vital base for Allied forces, primarily the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF), during World War II, particularly within the China Burma India Theater (CBI) of operations.
History Constructed in the early stages of World War II, Hailakandi Airfield became operational as part of the extensive network of airbases established across Assam. These airfields were crucial for supporting the war effort against Imperial Japan in Southeast Asia and China.
The primary function of Hailakandi Airfield was to facilitate the aerial transportation of supplies, equipment, and personnel over "The Hump" – the perilous air route across the Himalayan mountains. This airlift was the sole lifeline for resupplying Allied forces, particularly Chinese and American units, cut off by Japanese advances in Burma. The airfield hosted various USAAF units, including elements of the Tenth Air Force. Notably, the 443rd Troop Carrier Group, flying C-46 Commando and C-47 Skytrain aircraft, was stationed here and played a significant role in the Hump operations. The 1st Air Commando Group, known for its innovative tactical air support, also utilized Hailakandi at various times. Besides transport duties, the base provided logistical support and occasionally served as a staging point for bomber and fighter operations targeting Japanese positions in Burma.
Post-War Status Following the conclusion of World War II, Hailakandi Airfield, like many other temporary wartime airbases in the region, gradually fell into disuse.
