Haidmühle

Haidmühle is a municipality (Gemeinde) in the district of Freyung‑Grafenau, situated in the Lower Bavarian region (Regierungsbezirk Niederbayern) of the Federal Republic of Germany. It lies near the border with the Czech Republic and is part of the Bavarian Forest (Bayerischer Wald) nature region.

Geography

Haidmühle is located in the eastern part of the Bavarian Forest, at an elevation ranging from approximately 600 to 800 meters above sea level. The municipality covers an area of about 25 km² (9.7 sq mi). It borders the Czech municipality of Hejnice to the southeast and the German municipalities of Aicha vorm Wald and Bayerisch Eisenstein to the west and north, respectively. The region is characterized by heavily forested terrain, rolling hills, and several small streams that feed into the larger Ilz River basin.

History

The settlement of Haidmühle was first documented in the 14th century under the name “Haidmühle” (literally “heath mill” in German). Historically, the area belonged to the Bishopric of Passau until the secularisation of ecclesiastical territories in 1803, after which it became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria. The locality developed around a mill that processed timber and grain for the surrounding forest communities. In the 20th century, Haidmühle remained a small, predominantly agricultural and forestry‑based community. The post‑World‑War II period saw modest growth in tourism, driven by its proximity to the Bavarian Forest National Park.

Demographics

As of the most recent official statistics (2023), Haidmühle has a population of roughly 1,200 inhabitants. The population density is low, reflecting the municipality’s rural character. The demographic profile shows an aging population trend common to many small Bavarian villages, with a median age above 45 years.

Administration

Haidmühle is governed by a mayor (Bürgermeister) and a municipal council (Gemeinderat). The municipality is part of the administrative community (Verwaltungsgemeinschaft) of Bayerisch Eisenstein. It falls under the jurisdiction of the district court (Amtsgericht) in Freyung‑Grafenau.

Economy

The local economy is primarily based on forestry, small‑scale agriculture, and tourism. The Bavarian Forest attracts hikers, cyclists, and winter sport enthusiasts, providing a source of seasonal income for local businesses such as guesthouses, restaurants, and craft shops. Limited manufacturing and service enterprises operate within the municipal boundaries, often catering to the needs of residents and tourists.

Infrastructure and Transport

Haidmühle is accessible via the state road (Landesstraße) 218, which connects the municipality with nearby towns such as Bayerisch Eisenstein and Freyung. The nearest major railway stations are located in Bayerisch Eisenstein (border station) and Wegscheid, offering regional train services on the Bavarian Forest Railway (Bayerische Waldbahn). Public transport within Haidmühle consists mainly of regional bus routes that link the village to surrounding municipalities.
