HNLMS Jan van Brakel (1936)

The HNLMS Jan van Brakel was a Jan van Amstel-class minesweeper of the Royal Netherlands Navy. Laid down in 1936 and commissioned in 1937, she was named after Dutch naval commander Jan van Brakel. These ships were intended for service in the Netherlands East Indies.

During the Second World War, she served primarily in the Dutch East Indies. She participated in several actions against Japanese forces, including escort duties and patrols. The Jan van Brakel was sunk on March 8, 1942, during the Battle of Surabaya. After sustaining damage, she was scuttled to prevent capture by the advancing Japanese forces.
