HMY Royal George was a Royal Yacht of the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom, launched on 17 July 1817 at Deptford Dockyard. She was named in honor of King George III.
History and Service
Built as a wooden-hulled sailing yacht of 330 tons burthen, she measured 103 feet (31.4 m) on deck, with a beam of 26 feet 6 inches (8.1 m) and a depth of hold of 11 feet 6 inches (3.5 m). She carried a complement of 67 men and was armed with 8 brass swivel guns.
The yacht served the British monarchy, most notably conveying Queen Victoria and her consort, Prince Albert, to Edinburgh in August 1842. This was her last recorded active use.
Later Years and Fate
After 1842, the vessel was laid up. In 1902, she was converted into an accommodation hulk (a floating living quarters for personnel). She was eventually broken up in 1905.
Legacy
Several artifacts from the yacht survive. Her figurehead is preserved and on display at the National Maritime Museum in London. Additionally, gilded dolphins and rope ornamentation from the yacht were reused as decorative elements in the principal bedroom of Adelaide Cottage in Home Park, Windsor.
