HM Prison Swansea is a Category B men's prison located in the Sandfields area of Swansea, Wales. It is operated by His Majesty's Prison Service and serves as a local prison for the courts of South West Wales.
The facility was constructed between 1853 and 1861, opening its doors in 1861 to replace an earlier jail located at Swansea Castle. Its architecture is characteristic of the Victorian era, originally designed to implement the "separate system" of prisoner isolation. Historically, the prison was a site for capital punishment; a total of 15 executions were carried out at the location between 1858 and 1958, after which the practice was abolished in the United Kingdom.
As a local prison, HMP Swansea primarily holds prisoners on remand from the local courts, as well as those who have been recently sentenced or are serving short sentences. The prison's population consists of adult males. The infrastructure includes several wings designated for residential use, alongside facilities for healthcare, education, and vocational training intended to assist in the rehabilitation of inmates.
The prison is subject to statutory inspections by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) and monitoring by an Independent Monitoring Board (IMB).
