The system is a member of the Lower Centaurus Crux subgroup of the Scorpius–Centaurus OB association, a nearby region of recent star formation. It is notable for hosting a directly imaged, planetary‑mass companion, HD 106906 b, and a circumstellar debris disk.

The companion orbits at a projected separation of about 735 AU from the binary pair, making it one of the widest‑separation planetary‑mass companions known. Its discovery was reported in 2013 using the Gemini Planet Imager and the Magellan Adaptive Optics system.

Debris disk

Infrared observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Herschel Space Observatory reveal excess emission indicative of a cold, dusty debris disk surrounding the binary. High‑contrast imaging shows the disk to be nearly edge‑on, extending to several hundred astronomical units. The disk’s morphology suggests dynamical perturbations, possibly related to the distant companion HD 106906 b.
