Hüttenrode

Hüttenrode is a village and former municipality located in the Harz district of the federal state of Saxony‑Anhalt, Germany. The settlement lies in the eastern Harz mountains, approximately 10 kilometres southeast of the town of Harzgerode.

Administrative status
Until 31 December 2009, Hüttenrode functioned as an independent municipality. On 1 January 2010, it was incorporated into the town of Harzgerode as part of a municipal reform in Saxony‑Anhalt. Consequently, Hüttenrode is now classified as an Ortsteil (local part) of Harzgerode.

Geography
The village is situated at an elevation of roughly 400 metres above sea level and is surrounded by forested hills characteristic of the Harz region. The area is traversed by minor watercourses that feed into the Selke River basin.

History
The name “Hüttenrode” combines the German words Hütte (meaning “hut” or historically “smelting works”) and Rode (meaning “clearing”), indicating a settlement that originated as a forest clearing associated with metalworking or charcoal production. Historical records attest to habitation in the area dating back to the Middle Ages, with the local economy traditionally centered on forestry, mining, and related crafts.

Demographics
According to the latest available data from the Statistical Office of Saxony‑Anhalt (published prior to the 2010 merger), Hüttenrode had a population of approximately 600 residents. Post‑merger population figures are recorded under the broader statistics for Harzgerode.

Infrastructure
The village is connected to regional road networks via local Landesstraßen, providing access to nearby towns such as Harzgerode and the district capital, Halberstadt. Public transportation includes regional bus services that link Hüttenrode with surrounding communities. Essential services such as primary education, retail, and municipal administration are largely integrated with the administrative center of Harzgerode.

Cultural and natural attractions
Hüttenrode is located near several hiking trails that explore the Harz mountain landscape, including routes that lead to historic mining sites and natural monuments. The surrounding forests are managed for both conservation and sustainable timber production.
