Hörður Ingi Gunnarsson

Hörður Ingi Gunnarsson (born 1 October 1969) is an Icelandic politician affiliated with the Independence Party (Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn). He has been a member of the Althing, Iceland’s national parliament, since his first election in 2007, representing the Southwest constituency (later the Reykjavík North constituency after electoral boundary changes).

In November 2021, Gunnarsson was appointed Minister of Health and Social Security in the coalition government led by Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir. He held this portfolio through a period that included the ongoing response to the COVID‑19 pandemic and various health‑system reforms. He remained in office until a cabinet reshuffle in October 2023, after which he was succeeded by another minister.

Gunnarsson’s political career has also involved service on several parliamentary committees, including those related to welfare, health, and local government. Prior to his ministerial appointment, he held leadership positions within his party’s parliamentary group.
