Hôtel de Grimaldi-Régusse is a 17th-century hôtel particulier (private mansion) located at 26 Rue de l'Opéra in Aix-en-Provence, France. It is classified as a monument historique (listed historical monument) since 1973.
History and Architecture
The mansion was built in 1680 for Charles de Grimaldi-Régusse, who served as President of the Parliament of Provence. During the same period, the front façade was redesigned by the Aix-based architect Laurent Vallon. The building is considered emblematic of the Baroque-Aixian architectural style.
Notable Features
- The wooden entrance door is flanked by small carved lions on either side of a coat of arms.
- The door panels are decorated with leaf motifs and geometric shapes in relief, surrounding an œil-de-bœuf window surmounted by a lively mask.
- On the ground floor, opening onto the garden, is a drawing room with a ceiling painted by Sébastien Barras depicting an assembly of the gods.
- Adjacent is a boudoir with a stuccoed and painted cupola featuring bold perspective effects.
Heritage Status
The building is listed in the Mérimée database, the French Architectural Heritage inventory maintained by the Ministry of Culture and Communication.
