Hólahreppur was a former rural municipality (Icelandic: hreppur) located in the Skagafjörður region of northern Iceland.
- Geographical Context: Hólahreppur encompassed the area around Hólar í Hjaltadal, a historically and culturally significant site in Iceland. Hólar served as one of Iceland's two episcopal sees from 1106 until 1801, and is now home to Hólar University College. The municipality was situated in the fertile valley of Hjaltadalur.
- Administrative History: Like many smaller hreppurs in Iceland, Hólahreppur existed as an independent administrative entity for many decades. However, a trend towards larger, more consolidated municipalities led to its dissolution.
- Merger: On June 6, 1998, Hólahreppur, along with eleven other hreppurs in the Skagafjörður region (including Skefilsstaðahreppur, Sauðárkrókshreppur, Rípurhreppur, Hofshreppur, Seyluhreppur, Lýtingsstaðahreppur, Akrahreppur, Viðvíkurhreppur, Hjaltastaðahreppur, and Fellshreppur), merged to form the much larger and unified municipality of Sveitarfélagið Skagafjörður (Skagafjörður Municipality). This merger aimed to streamline local administration and pool resources.
- Legacy: Although no longer an independent administrative unit, the name "Hólahreppur" refers to the specific historical district and its significant cultural heritage centered around Hólar.
