György Csordás (19 October 1928 – 9 May 2000) was a Hungarian freestyle swimmer. He was a prominent figure in Hungarian swimming during the late 1940s and early 1950s, known for his achievements in various international competitions.
Early Life and Career
György Csordás was born in Tenke, Hungary. He began his swimming career at a young age, quickly establishing himself as a talented long-distance freestyle swimmer.
International Competitions
Csordás represented Hungary in two Olympic Games:
- 1948 London Olympics: He competed in the 400 meter freestyle and 1500 meter freestyle events.
- 1952 Helsinki Olympics: He again participated in the 400 meter freestyle and 1500 meter freestyle.
His most significant international successes came at the European Aquatics Championships:
- 1947 European Aquatics Championships (Monte Carlo): He earned a silver medal in the 1500 meter freestyle event.
- 1950 European Aquatics Championships (Vienna): This was his most successful championship, where he won two medals:
- Gold medal in the 400 meter freestyle.
- Bronze medal as part of the Hungarian 4x200 meter freestyle relay team.
Legacy
György Csordás's career highlighted Hungarian strength in swimming during the post-World War II era. He retired from competitive swimming after the 1952 Olympics. He passed away on 9 May 2000, at the age of 71.
