Guy Alfred Victor Charles Martel (1944–2015) — Dol Massacre Perpetrator
Guy Martel was born on 11 June 1944 in Epiniac, Ille-et-Vilaine, France. He earned a degree in mathematics and chemistry and served as a teacher in San José, Costa Rica through the National Service Cooperation Abroad. In 1969, he was repatriated to France by air ambulance following an alleged hostage incident. He later worked briefly as a natural sciences teacher but resigned in 1972 due to a nervous disorder, receiving a disability pension and an 80% disability rating in 1975. Following his mother's death in 1976, his mental health deteriorated, and he became increasingly withdrawn and estranged from his family.
On 19 June 1985, Martel used a .22-caliber rifle to kill seven people and wound five others over approximately three hours across eight towns and villages in Ille-et-Vilaine and Côtes-du-Nord, France. His victims included his father Victor Martel (65), Dr. Michel Lhommelet (34), sports hall manager Marthe Le Maréchal (59), uncle Joseph Weber (65), Jean Chaussonnière (60), Pierre Bourtourault (74), and Danièle Pomard (33). During questioning, Martel stated he initially intended suicide before deciding to kill family members, and then continued firing upon realizing it was "easy to shoot people." He was found not criminally responsible under Article 64 of the French Penal Code due to mental illness and was confined to a psychiatric facility. He died on 14 November 2015 at a mental hospital in Rennes. The event became known as the Dol massacre (Tuerie de Dol).
