Gustavo Quintero (born 5 May 1939 in Medellín, Colombia – died 16 August 2016) was a Colombian singer, composer, and bandleader prominent in the development of tropical and tropical cumbia music in Colombia.
Early life and education
Quintero was born into a musical family in Medellín. He began studying music at a young age, focusing on vocal techniques and traditional Colombian rhythms.
Career
In the early 1960s, Quintero formed the group Los Gaiteros de San José, which later evolved into the widely recognized ensemble Los Corraleros de Majagual. Under his direction, the group popularized a style that blended traditional cumbia, porro, and vallenato with contemporary arrangements. Quintero's compositions, such as “Torito,” “Pica la Monita,” and “El Pescador,” became staples of Colombian popular music and were frequently covered by other artists throughout Latin America.
Quintero also pursued a solo career, releasing several albums that showcased his vocal versatility and songwriting skills. He collaborated with notable Colombian musicians, including Luis Carlos Meyer, Julio Palma, and Pacho Galán.
Impact and legacy
Gustavo Quintero is credited with modernizing Colombian tropical music while preserving its folkloric roots. His work contributed to the international recognition of Colombian cumbia, influencing subsequent generations of musicians in Colombia and abroad. In recognition of his contributions, he received multiple national honors, including the Orden al Mérito Artístico from the Colombian Ministry of Culture.
Personal life
Quintero was married to María Luisa Pérez and had three children. He remained active in music production and mentorship until his death in 2016.
