Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (born 1956) is a retired Indian Army officer and the current Governor of Uttarakhand. He served for nearly four decades in the Indian Army, holding various command, staff, and instructional appointments before his retirement in 2016.
Early Life and Military Career Born in 1956, Gurmit Singh was commissioned into the Indian Army in 1976. During his extensive military career, he distinguished himself across various operational theatres and staff roles. He specialized in counter-insurgency operations and also gained significant experience in matters related to the China border, where he was involved in planning and executing various operations.
His key command appointments included leading an Infantry Battalion in the Eastern Sector, an Infantry Brigade during counter-insurgency operations, and an Infantry Division. On the staff side, he held crucial positions such as Additional Director General of Military Intelligence (ADG MI), Director General of Military Operations (DGMO), and eventually served as the Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Information Systems & Training). He also served as an instructor at various military academies, contributing to the training and development of future leaders.
Post-Military Career After retiring from the Indian Army in 2016, Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh was appointed as the 8th Governor of Uttarakhand in September 2021, succeeding Baby Rani Maurya. As Governor, he serves as the constitutional head of the state.
