History
The earliest documented reference to Gunskirchen dates to the 12th century, when it was part of the Duchy of Bavaria. Following the Treaty of Teschen in 1779, the area was transferred to the Habsburg Monarchy and incorporated into Upper Austria. The municipality developed as an agrarian settlement, with gradual industrialization occurring in the 20th century.
During the final months of World War II, a subcamp of the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp system was established near Gunskirchen. Known as the Gunskirchen subcamp, it was used to detain prisoners, primarily political detainees and forced laborers from various occupied territories. In April 1945, the camp was liberated by the United States Army’s 71st Infantry Division. Post‑war, the site was investigated by Allied authorities, and the remaining infrastructure was eventually dismantled. The events at the subcamp are documented in historical archives and are commemorated locally through memorials and educational initiatives.
