Guillermo Eleazar
Guillermo Lorenzo Tolentino Eleazar (born November 13, 1965) is a retired Filipino police general who served as the 26th Chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) from May 8, 2021, to November 12, 2021. Throughout his career, he held several key positions within the PNP, gaining recognition for his firm stance against crime, illegal activities, and his efforts towards internal cleansing within the police force.
Early Life and Education Eleazar was born in Tagkawayan, Quezon, Philippines. He is a proud alumnus of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) "Hinirang" Class of 1987, where he earned his commission as a second lieutenant.
Career Eleazar's career in the Philippine National Police spanned over three decades, marked by a steady rise through the ranks and assignments to various critical posts:
- Early Assignments: He held various positions in different police units across the country, including provincial and regional commands. His early career focused on operational duties and law enforcement.
- National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO): Eleazar served as the Director of the NCRPO, the police force responsible for metropolitan Manila. During his tenure, he became known for his aggressive campaigns against illegal gambling, drug-related crimes, and internal misconduct among police officers. He implemented initiatives aimed at improving police visibility and accountability.
- Chief of the PNP Directorial Staff: Prior to becoming PNP Chief, he served as the Chief of the Directorial Staff, the fourth-highest position in the PNP, responsible for overseeing the various directorial staff functions and ensuring the smooth operation of the organization.
- Commander of the Joint Task Force COVID Shield: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Eleazar was appointed commander of the Joint Task Force COVID Shield, which enforced community quarantine protocols and health guidelines across the country. He played a significant role in coordinating police efforts with local government units and other government agencies during the public health crisis.
- Chief of the Philippine National Police: On May 8, 2021, Eleazar was appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte as the Chief of the PNP, succeeding Debold Sinas.
