Guadalupe is a city and the municipal seat of the municipality of Guadalupe, located in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua. It is situated in the Valle de Juárez along the Río Bravo (Rio Grande), which forms the international border with the United States (Texas).
Municipality
The Municipality of Guadalupe is one of the 67 municipalities of Chihuahua. It was created by decree of the Congress of Chihuahua on March 17, 1855. The municipality covers an area of approximately 6,200.5 km² (2,394 sq mi), representing about 2.51% of the total territory of Chihuahua. It borders the municipalities of Juárez to the northwest, Práxedis G. Guerrero to the north, Ahumada to the west, and Coyame del Sotol and Ojinaga to the south. To the east, the Río Bravo separates it from El Paso, Hudspeth, Jeff Davis, and Presidio counties in Texas.
Geography and Climate
The terrain is predominantly flat and desert, characteristic of the Chihuahuan Desert. Low mountain ranges cross the territory, including the Sierra de Guadalupe, Sierra El Presidio, and others. The only significant watercourse is the Río Bravo; other streams are intermittent. The climate is classified as very dry temperate, with extreme temperatures ranging from 43 °C (109 °F) to -23 °C (-9 °F). Average annual precipitation is very low, between 200 and 300 mm. Flora consists of desert scrub, cacti, agave, and yucca. Fauna includes doves, pumas, bobcats, hares, and coyotes.
Demographics
As of the 2020 census conducted by INEGI, the municipality had a total population of 4,237 inhabitants (50.3% male, 49.7% female). The municipal seat, also called Guadalupe, had a population of 1,998. Other major localities include Doctor Porfirio Parra (La Caseta) with 677 inhabitants, Juárez y Reforma with 569, and Rinconada del Mimbre with 421. The population has declined in recent years, primarily due to emigration.
Economy
The main economic sectors include retail trade (48 establishments), other services excluding government activities (38 establishments), accommodation and food preparation services (18 establishments), manufacturing (9 establishments), and educational services (8 establishments). Agriculture is also present, with storage facilities for agricultural products.
Infrastructure
The municipality is connected by Federal Highway 2, which runs from Ciudad Juárez through the main localities. There are also approximately 240 km of dirt roads connecting smaller communities. The nearest major airport is Abraham González International Airport in Ciudad Juárez, approximately 41 km away.
Government
The municipal government consists of a municipal president (mayor) and six regidores (council members), elected for a three-year term. As of the 2024–2027 term, the municipal president is Lorenzo Tarango Venegas of the Partido Pueblo party. The municipality is subdivided into one municipal section (Vado de Cedillos) and five commissariats.
Notable Events
In December 2010, the town gained international attention when police officer Ericka Gandara disappeared, leaving the town with no active police officers. The case received coverage from CNN and other international media outlets. In June 2018, a narcofosa (mass grave attributed to organized crime) containing the remains of 13 people was discovered in the area.
