Definition
The Grindeanu Cabinet was the 124th government of Romania, formed under Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu. It governed from 4 January 2017 until its dissolution on 29 June 2017.
Overview
The cabinet emerged after the 2016 Romanian legislative elections, in which the Social Democratic Party (Partidul Social Democrat, PSD) secured a parliamentary majority and formed a coalition with the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (Alianța Liberalilor și Democraților, ALDE). Sorin Grindeanu, a PSD member, was nominated by President Klaus Iohannis and received parliamentary approval on 4 January 2017. The government pursued a program focused on fiscal consolidation, infrastructure projects, and social welfare measures.
During its tenure, the cabinet faced internal party tensions, particularly with PSD leader Liviu Dragnea, who sought greater influence over governmental decisions. These tensions culminated in a political crisis, and on 27 February 2017 the Parliament passed a motion of no confidence against Grindeanu, which the President refused to act upon. Subsequently, on 23 June 2017 the President dismissed Grindeanu, citing loss of confidence within the ruling coalition, and appointed a new prime minister, Mihai Tudose, to form a succeeding cabinet.
Etymology/Origin
The term “Grindeanu Cabinet” follows the conventional naming practice for Romanian governments, wherein the cabinet is identified by the surname of the serving prime minister—in this case, Sorin Grindeanu. The word “cabinet” derives from the French cabinet, denoting a body of ministers heading executive departments.
