Grimpoteuthis umbellata

Taxonomy

  • Kingdom: Animalia
  • Phylum: Mollusca
  • Class: Cephalopoda
  • Order: Octopoda
  • Family: Grimpoteuthidae
  • Genus: Grimpoteuthis
  • Species: Grimpoteuthis umbellata (P. Fischer, 1884)

Common name
Often referred to as a “dumbo octopus” because of the ear‑like fins on its mantle.

Description
Grimpoteuthis umbellata is a deep‑sea octopus characterized by a semi‑gelatinous, bell‑shaped body and prominent lateral fins that resemble the ears of Disney’s Dumbo. The arms are subequal, bearing 63–70 suckers each, with cirri (small hair‑like structures) beginning between the third and fifth suckers. Web nodules occur between the 27th and 31st sucker on each arm. The species lacks a radula and posterior salivary glands. The lectotype specimen, which is in poor condition, has arms up to 111 mm in length.

Distribution and habitat
The species is known from three historical specimens collected in 1883 during the French research vessel Le Talisman expedition. Two specimens were retrieved from the Atlantic Ocean off Morocco, and a larger specimen was found off the Azores at a depth of approximately 2,235 m. The limited material makes the full geographic and bathymetric range uncertain.

Conservation status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists Grimpoteuthis umbellata as Data Deficient, reflecting the paucity of recent observations and limited knowledge of its population trends, ecology, and threats.

Research and taxonomy notes
The three original specimens were initially described under the name Cirroteuthis umbellata and later reassigned to the genus Grimpoteuthis. Subsequent examination revealed that only two of the three specimens belong to Grimpoteuthis; the smallest may represent a juvenile Grimpoteuthis or an Opisthoteuthis species. Recent redescriptions of the lectotype have highlighted morphological similarities to Grimpoteuthis discoveryi, suggesting a possible senior synonymy, though molecular data are lacking to confirm this relationship.
