The station is situated in downtown Gresham, immediately west of Northeast Roberts Avenue and north of Northeast Division Street, with its official address at 100 West Powell Boulevard. History

Gresham station commenced operations on September 5, 1986. Its opening was part of the original [[Metropolitan Area Express|MAX Blue Line]] (initially referred to as the Banfield Light Rail Project), which at the time extended 15 miles (24 km) from Downtown Portland to Gresham. Upon its inauguration, it served as the eastern terminus of the line, marking a significant expansion of public transportation options for the city of Gresham and the eastern suburbs of Portland.
