Greg Newsome II (born February 12, 1999) is an American professional football player who plays as a cornerback for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Northwestern University, where he was recognized as a consensus All‑Big Ten selection and earned first‑team All‑American honors in his senior year.
Early life and education
Newsome was born in Chicago, Illinois, and attended St. Rita of Cascia High School. In high school he played multiple positions on both offense and defense, recording notable statistics as a defensive back and wide receiver. He was rated a three‑star recruit and committed to Northwestern University, enrolling in 2017.
College career
At Northwestern, Newsome redshirted his freshman year, then became a starter at cornerback in 2018. Over his collegiate career (2018–2020), he accumulated 161 tackles, 23 pass breakups, and six interceptions. Cleveland Browns (2021–present)
He signed a four‑year rookie contract with the Browns in July 2021. Newsome made his NFL debut in the 2021 season opener and recorded his first career interception in Week 6 against the Arizona Cardinals. Throughout his rookie season, he appeared in 14 games, starting six, and posted 57 total tackles, three pass deflections, and one interception. In the 2022 season, he became a regular starter, participating in all 17 regular‑season games and contributing 84 tackles, nine pass breakups, and two interceptions. As of the end of the 2023 season, Newsome continues to serve as a starting cornerback for the Browns, known for his coverage skills and tackling ability.
