Grecia is a canton and its eponymous district located in the province of Alajuela, Costa Rica. It forms part of the Central Valley region, situated approximately 24 kilometres (15 mi) north of the national capital, San José. The district serves as the administrative center of the canton of the same name.
Geography
The district occupies an area of about 3.73 km² (1.44 sq mi) at an elevation of roughly 1,050 m (3,445 ft) above sea level. The climate is classified as a tropical savanna (Aw) with relatively consistent temperatures moderated by altitude.
Demographics
According to the 2011 national census conducted by the Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos (INEC), Grecia district had a population of 14,858 inhabitants, yielding a population density of approximately 3,980 inhabitants per km². Updated estimates suggest modest growth, though official figures beyond 2011 have not been published.
History
Grecia was founded on 10 August 1856 by a group of European immigrants, predominantly from Switzerland and Germany. The settlement was named “Grecia” (Spanish for “Greece”) in honor of the Greek community that contributed to its early development, reflecting the founders’ appreciation of classical culture. The canton was officially created on 26 July 1915 by decree of the Costa Rican government.
Economy
The local economy is diversified, with agriculture—particularly coffee, sugarcane, and ornamental plants—playing a significant role. In recent decades, commerce and services have expanded, driven by Grecia’s position as a transport hub intersecting National Routes 107, 120, and 126. Tourism is modest but notable for attractions such as the metal church (Iglesia de la Luz), a distinctive prefabricated steel structure erected in 1905, and the nearby Grecia Botanical Garden (Jardín Botánico de Grecia).
Infrastructure
Grecia is served by a network of paved roads linking it to Alajuela, San José, and neighboring cantons. Public transportation includes regional bus routes. The district hosts educational institutions ranging from primary schools to the Instituto Tecnológico de Grecia, a technical college offering vocational training.
Culture and Notable Features
The metal church of Grecia, designed by Swiss architect Eugenio Granier, is recognized as a rare example of prefabricated iron architecture in Central America. Annual cultural events include the Feria del Café (Coffee Fair) and celebrations on the feast day of Saint James the Greater (Santiago Apóstol), the patron saint of the town.
