Common Name
- No widely used common name; generally referred to by its scientific name.
Description
Grapholita pallifrontana is a small moth belonging to the tortricid group. Adults have a wingspan of approximately 12–15 mm. The forewings are typically grayish‑brown with distinctive pale or whitish patches near the front edge (hence the specific epithet “pallifrontana,” meaning “pale front”). The hindwings are lighter in color and may exhibit a subtle fringe.
Distribution
The species is recorded across parts of Europe, including:
- Central and Eastern Europe (e.g., Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine)
- Southern Europe (e.g., Italy, Spain)
Occurrences outside Europe are not well documented, and there is no current evidence of the species being established in other continents.
Habitat
Grapholita pallifrontana is associated with habitats where its larval host plants are present. Typical environments include:
- Meadows and grasslands
- Edge habitats of forests and shrublands
- Areas with cultivated or wild Rosaceae species
Life Cycle and Biology
- Larval Host Plants: The larvae feed primarily on the fruits and shoots of plants in the family Rosaceae, especially species of Crataegus (hawthorn) and Rosa (rose).
- Development: Eggs are laid on host plant tissue. Larvae develop within the fruit or shoot, creating small tunnels or feeding chambers. Pupation occurs within the same feeding site or in a loosely spun cocoon among leaf litter.
- Adult Flight Period: Adults are typically on the wing from June to August, depending on local climate conditions.
Conservation Status
There is no specific conservation assessment for Grapholita pallifrontana on the IUCN Red List. The species is not considered to be under immediate threat, and it is generally regarded as locally common within suitable habitats.
Research and Monitoring
Due to its association with economically important Rosaceae crops, G. pallifrontana has been noted in agricultural pest monitoring programs. However, it is not regarded as a major pest species relative to other tortricid moths.
