Gorno Čičevo

Gorno Čičevo (Macedonian: Горно Чичево) is an abandoned village in the central part of North Macedonia, located within the Gradsko Municipality. The name "Gorno" translates to "Upper" in Macedonian, distinguishing it from the nearby settlement of Dolno Čičevo ("Lower Čičevo").

Geography Gorno Čičevo is situated in the Vardar Statistical Region, specifically in the western part of the Gradsko Municipality. The area is predominantly rural, characterized by hilly terrain and agricultural lands, typical of the central Macedonian landscape. It is located relatively close to the main Vardar river valley, though often in more elevated or remote positions compared to its "lower" counterpart.

Demographics Like many rural villages in North Macedonia, Gorno Čičevo has experienced significant depopulation over the past decades, leading to its eventual abandonment. Historical census data illustrates this trend:

  • 2002 Census: The village had a population of 10 inhabitants, all of whom identified as Macedonian.
  • 2021 Census: The population of Gorno Čičevo was recorded as 0, officially marking it as an abandoned settlement.

The decline in population in villages like Gorno Čičevo is a common phenomenon throughout the Balkans, attributed to factors such as economic migration to larger urban centers or abroad, and a general shift away from traditional agricultural lifestyles.

History and Significance While specific historical events for Gorno Čičevo are not widely documented, its existence and subsequent abandonment reflect broader demographic and socio-economic changes in North Macedonia. Settlements like Gorno Čičevo once played a role in the local agrarian economy and cultural fabric. Its current status as an uninhabited village serves as a poignant example of rural exodus and the challenges faced by remote communities in the region.
