Gornje Dubrave

Geography and Location

Gornje Dubrave is situated in the central part of Croatia, within a region historically associated with both Lika and Kordun. It is part of the larger administrative unit of Ogulin, a city known for its geographical position between the regions of Gorski Kotar and Lika. The name "Dubrave" translates to "oak groves" in Croatian, indicating the area's historical natural landscape. "Gornje" means "Upper," distinguishing it from the nearby village of Donje Dubrave ("Lower Dubrave").

History

Like many settlements in this part of Croatia, Gornje Dubrave has a history marked by demographic shifts and the broader historical events of the region. Historically, the area had a significant Serbian population. The village, along with its surroundings, was heavily impacted by the Croatian War of Independence (1991–1995), during which it was part of the self-proclaimed Republic of Serbian Krajina. The aftermath of the war, particularly military operations like Operation Storm in 1995, led to significant population displacement and a subsequent decline in the number of inhabitants.

Demographics

According to the 2021 Croatian census, Gornje Dubrave had a population of 129 inhabitants. This figure represents a continued decline from previous censuses, including the 2011 census which recorded 154 inhabitants. The demographic trend reflects general depopulation in rural areas of Croatia, exacerbated in this region by the consequences of the war.

Economy and Culture

The economy of Gornje Dubrave is primarily rural, with traditional agricultural activities forming the main source of livelihood for its residents. Due to its reduced population and remote location, significant economic development or large-scale cultural institutions are limited. The community largely maintains a rural lifestyle.
