Definition
Gorenja Žetina is a small, dispersed settlement located in the Municipality of Gorenja Vas–Poljane in the Upper Carniola (Slovene: Gorenjska) region of northwestern Slovenia.
Overview
The settlement lies in the hilly terrain west of the town of Gorenja Vas, at an elevation of approximately 600–650 meters above sea level. It is part of the traditional region of Upper Carniola and falls under the statistical region of Upper Carniola as defined by the Slovenian government. As of the 2002 census, Gorenja Žetina had a population of 48 residents, although more recent figures have not been published. The area is primarily agricultural, with a landscape characterized by mixed forests, pastures, and scattered farmsteads.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Gorenja Žetina” is derived from Slovene elements: “gorenja” means “upper” or “higher,” indicating its position relative to nearby settlements, while “Žetina” is thought to originate from a personal name or a term related to harvesting (žetev, “reaping”). The name therefore likely denotes “Upper Žetina,” distinguishing it from a lower counterpart, such as “Dolenja Žetina” (Lower Žetina), which exists in the same municipality.
