History
Construction began in July 2009. The facility accepted its first prisoners in July 2012. The state planned for all 1,050 state prisoners who had been housed out of state—in private prisons in Colorado and Arizona—to be transferred to Goose Creek by September 2013.

The prison is managed by the Alaska Department of Corrections. It provides housing for male inmates and offers various rehabilitative and reformative programs, including partnerships with local community entities aimed at supporting successful reintegration of prisoners upon release.
