General description
Gomphosphaeriaceae is a family of fresh‑water green algae (Chlorophyta) within the order Sphaeropleales. Members of the family are primarily colonial, forming non‑motile aggregates of spherical or ellipsoidal cells embedded in a gelatinous mucilage. Each cell typically contains one or more parietal chloroplasts that may be pyrenoid‑bearing, contributing to the photosynthetic capacity of the colony. Colonies can vary in size from a few cells to several hundred, often appearing as globular or irregularly shaped masses attached to substrates such as stones, aquatic plants, or sediments.
Key genera
The family is best known for the genus Gomphosphaeria, which encompasses the majority of described species. Additional genera that have been tentatively placed within Gomphosphaeriaceae include Pseudogomphosphaeria and Acanthoceras (subject to ongoing taxonomic revision). The exact composition of the family may vary among different taxonomic databases, reflecting the current state of phylogenetic research.
Distribution and habitat
Species of Gomphosphaeriaceae are cosmopolitan in temperate and subtropical regions. They inhabit standing or slow‑flowing freshwater bodies such as ponds, lakes, and ditches, and are occasionally recorded in brackish environments where salinity remains low. Colonies are frequently found attached to submerged surfaces but can also occur as free‑floating aggregates.
