Gomphocerus

Gomphocerus is a genus of short-horned grasshoppers in the family Acrididae, subfamily Gomphocerinae. Members of this genus are commonly referred to as slant-faced grasshoppers due to the characteristic angled profile of their heads.

Taxonomy

  • Kingdom: Animalia
  • Phylum: Arthropoda
  • Class: Insecta
  • Order: Orthoptera
  • Family: Acrididae
  • Subfamily: Gomphocerinae
  • Genus: Gomphocerus Stål, 1873

Diagnostic characteristics

  • Medium-sized grasshoppers, typically 15–30 mm in length.
  • Pronotum with a distinct median carina and lateral lobes.
  • Head slanted backward, giving a “slant‑faced” appearance.
  • Tegmina (forewings) usually longer than the abdomen and clear or lightly striated.
  • Hind femora robust, adapted for jumping.

Distribution
Species of Gomphocerus are primarily distributed across the Palearctic region, with records from Europe, North Africa, and parts of temperate Asia. Some species extend into the Near East.

Ecology and behavior

  • Herbivorous; feed on a variety of grasses and low herbaceous plants.
  • Typically inhabit grasslands, meadows, and open steppe habitats.
  • Adults are diurnal and are known for their characteristic stridulatory songs, produced by rubbing the hind femur against the forewing.

Selected species
The genus includes several recognized species, among which the most commonly cited are:

Species Authority Distribution
Gomphocerus sibiricus (Linnaeus, 1767) Eurasian steppes, Siberia
Gomphocerus licenti (Uvarov, 1935) Central Asia
Gomphocerus angustifrons (Marschall, 1932) Southern Europe
Gomphocerus vladimiri (Bey-Bienko, 1935) Eastern Europe, western Russia

Conservation status
Most Gomphocerus species are not listed as threatened on the IUCN Red List; however, habitat loss due to agricultural intensification and land‑use change can affect local populations.

Research and significance

  • The genus is frequently used in ecological studies of grassland biodiversity and in investigations of acoustic communication among orthopterans.
  • Gomphocerus species serve as bioindicators for habitat quality in temperate grassland ecosystems.
