Golpe (Spanish for "hit," "strike," or "tap") is a distinctive percussive guitar technique primarily associated with flamenco music. It involves tapping or striking the soundboard of the guitar, usually with a fingernail, to create a rhythmic accent and add a percussive layer to the music.
Technique and Execution
The golpe is typically executed by lightly but firmly striking the guitar's soundboard with one of the fingernails of the strumming hand, most commonly the middle or ring finger, and occasionally the thumb. The strike is usually performed near the bridge or slightly above the soundhole, an area that produces a clear, resonant "knock" or "tap" sound. This percussive action is often integrated with other guitar techniques such as rasgueados (strums), picados (alternate picking), or arpeggios, blending seamlessly with the melodic and harmonic elements.
To protect the guitar's delicate soundboard from repeated impact, flamenco guitars are almost universally fitted with a transparent or colored pickguard, specifically designed for this purpose, known as a golpeador.
