Location Gohad is situated in the northern part of Madhya Pradesh, approximately 45 kilometers from the city of Gwalior and 30 kilometers from Bhind, which is the district headquarters. It is located within the historically significant Chambal region.

History Gohad holds significant historical importance as the capital of the Gohad State, an erstwhile princely state ruled by the Jat dynasty. The Gohad State was established by Rana Singh Deo of the Bamraulia Jat clan in the early 18th century.

  • Founding and Rise: The Jats of Gohad rose to prominence amidst the decline of the Mughal Empire. The state emerged as a key power in the Malwa region and was frequently involved in conflicts and alliances with the Marathas, Mughals, and later, the British.
  • Notable Rulers: Among its significant rulers was Maharaja Rana Chhatrasal Singh, who considerably expanded the state's influence and consolidated its power.
  • Gohad Fort: The town is home to the historic Gohad Fort, a formidable defensive structure built by the Jat rulers. The fort served as a stronghold and a symbol of their sovereignty. It features distinctive architectural elements and has been the site of numerous historical battles.
  • Treaty of Gohad (1781): A notable historical event associated with Gohad was the Treaty of Gohad, signed between the British East India Company and the Marathas. This treaty, among other provisions, recognized the independence of the Rana of Gohad. However, the state later came under Maratha control again before being restored to the Jats under British protection.

Modern Status Today, Gohad functions as a municipal town (Nagar Palika Parishad) and serves as a block headquarters within the Bhind district. It acts as a local administrative and commercial center for the surrounding rural areas. While its historical glory has receded, the fort and other remnants stand as testaments to its significant past.
