Goh Lay Kuan (born 1939) is a Singaporean dancer, choreographer, and pioneer of modern dance in Singapore. She studied ballet and modern dance in the United Kingdom, training at institutions such as the Royal Academy of Dance. Upon returning to Singapore, she became instrumental in developing the country’s contemporary dance scene.
In 1979, Goh co‑founded the National Dance Theatre of Singapore (NDTS), which later evolved into the Singapore Dance Theatre, together with her husband, playwright Kuo Pao Kun. Through the company, she created original works that blended Western modern dance techniques with Asian cultural themes. Goh also taught extensively, mentoring several generations of Singaporean dancers.
Her contributions to the arts have been formally recognized. She received Singapore’s Cultural Medallion for dance in 1990, the nation’s highest artistic honor. Goh has continued to be active in dance education and choreography, influencing the development of contemporary performance in Singapore.
