Godefroid Pelckmans

Definition Godefroid Pelckmans (1904–1991) was a Belgian Roman Catholic missionary and religious leader, best known for his service with the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (CICM), also known as the Scheut Missions. He served as the Superior General of the CICM from 1957 to 1967.

Overview Born in Belgium in 1904, Godefroid Pelckmans joined the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, a missionary order founded in Scheut, Anderlecht, Belgium, dedicated to evangelization, primarily in non-Christian countries. After his ordination as a priest, he was assigned to the Belgian Congo (now the Democratic Republic of Congo), where he spent a significant portion of his missionary career. His leadership qualities were recognized within the congregation, leading to his election as Superior General in 1957. His tenure as Superior General coincided with a pivotal period in the history of the Congo, encompassing its independence from Belgium in 1960 and the subsequent political instability and decolonization across Africa. During this time, he was responsible for guiding the CICM through significant changes in its mission and presence in newly independent nations. Pelckmans died in 1991.

Etymology/Origin The name "Godefroid" is a French form of the Germanic name Godfrey, meaning "peace of God." "Pelckmans" is a Flemish (Dutch) surname originating from Belgium.
