Glin Castle

Glin Castle is a historic tower house located in the village of Glin, County Limerick, Ireland. The structure dates to the late 15th or early 16th century and served as the ancestral seat of the hereditary title known as the Knight of Glin, a branch of the Anglo-Norman FitzGerald family.

History

  • Origins: The original fortification on the site is believed to have been erected in the late medieval period, with the present tower house constructed around the turn of the 16th century.
  • FitzGerald Ownership: The castle remained in the possession of the FitzGeralds of Glin for over four centuries. The title “Knight of Glin” (Irish: Ridire Glin) was held by successive members of the family, who were prominent figures in local and national affairs.
  • 19th‑20th Century: In the 19th century the castle underwent alterations, including the addition of a Georgian-style wing and various interior refurbishments. The property survived the Irish Land Acts and the Irish War of Independence with minimal damage.
  • Modern Era: After the death of the last Knight of Glin, Sir George FitzGerald, in 2011, the estate was transferred to the Glin Castle Hotel Trust. The castle has since been operated as a boutique hotel and event venue, while retaining private residential quarters for the former owners.

Architecture

  • Structure: The core of the building is a rectangular stone tower house, typical of Irish defensive residences of the period, featuring thick walls, narrow slit windows, and a vaulted ground‑floor chamber.
  • Additions: Later extensions include a two‑storey Georgian wing with sash windows, a formal walled garden, and a 19th‑century gatehouse.
  • Materials: Local limestone and sandstone are the primary construction materials; the roof is covered with slate tiles.

Heritage Designation
Glin Castle is listed on the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH) of Ireland and is designated as a protected structure by Limerick County Council. The surrounding demesne includes ancillary structures such as stables, a dovecote, and a walled garden, all contributing to the site's historical significance.

Current Use
The castle functions primarily as a luxury hotel offering accommodation, dining, and event facilities. It also serves as a cultural venue, hosting weddings, conferences, and heritage tours. The hotel emphasizes the preservation of historic interiors, including original stone fireplaces, wooden beams, and period furnishings.
