Glen Echo Railroad

The Glen Echo Railroad was a miniature railway attraction located within Glen Echo Park in Glen Echo, Maryland, which operated during the park's history as a traditional amusement park. It served as a popular ride for park visitors, offering a leisurely journey through a portion of the park grounds.

History and Operation Glen Echo Park first opened in 1891 as a National Chautauqua Assembly. Following the decline of the Chautauqua movement, the site transitioned into an amusement park, reopening in 1899. The Glen Echo Railroad was introduced as one of the many attractions, a common feature in amusement parks of that era. It consisted of a small-scale locomotive pulling passenger cars along a dedicated track, providing a scenic ride for families and children.

The miniature railroad operated throughout much of the amusement park's existence, offering a gentle and enjoyable experience. The ride contributed to the overall nostalgic charm of Glen Echo Park, which was known for its historic carousel, bumper cars, and other classic attractions.

Decline and Legacy The Glen Echo Railroad, along with the rest of the amusement park, ceased operations in 1968. The park then closed due to various factors, including changing tastes in entertainment and civil rights protests related to its past segregation policies. The site was subsequently acquired by the National Park Service and later redeveloped into Glen Echo Park, Partnership for Arts and Culture, focusing on arts education and cultural programming. While many original structures and elements of the amusement park have been preserved or repurposed, the miniature railroad is no longer an operational feature of the park.
