Biography
Giuseppe Paupini was born on February 25, 1907, in Mondavio, in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, Italy. He completed his ecclesiastical studies and was ordained to the priesthood on March 19, 1930, at the age of 23.Ecclesiastical Career
After his ordination, Paupini entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See, serving in various capacities around the world.- Episcopal Consecration: On February 26, 1956, he was consecrated as titular Archbishop of Segermes by Cardinal Eugène Tisserant.
- Apostolic Nuncio Roles: His diplomatic assignments included:
- Apostolic Internuncio to Honduras and Nicaragua (1956–1957)
- Apostolic Nuncio to Cuba (1957–1959)
- Apostolic Nuncio to Guatemala and El Salvador (1959–1965)
- Apostolic Nuncio to Colombia (1965–1969)
- Cardinalate: Pope Paul VI created him Cardinal Deacon of Ognissanti in Via Appia Nuova in the consistory of April 28, 1969.
- Roman Curia: Following his elevation to cardinal, he was appointed Prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Sacraments on May 29, 1969. This dicastery was later reorganized and renamed the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. He held this significant curial position until his retirement in 1984.
- Papal Conclaves: Cardinal Paupini participated in both papal conclaves of 1978, which elected Pope John Paul I and Pope John Paul II.
- Cardinal Priest: He opted for the order of Cardinal Priests on June 30, 1979.
Cardinal Paupini died on July 18, 1992, in Rome, at the age of 85.
