Gisclareny is a municipality in the comarca of Berguedà, in the province of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It is located in the Pyrenees mountains, near the source of the Llobregat River.
Geography The municipality covers an area of approximately 31.5 square kilometers. It is characterized by high mountain terrain, with elevations ranging from roughly 1,200 to over 2,000 meters above sea level. The village center is situated at an altitude of approximately 1,350 meters. The municipal territory includes the Serra d'Ensija and the Puigllançada massifs. The Llobregat River originates within the municipal boundaries, specifically at the Fonts del Llobregat.
Demographics As of the most recent official census data (INE 2023), the population is very small, typically numbering fewer than 30 registered inhabitants, making it one of the least populated municipalities in the province of Barcelona. The population has experienced a significant decline since the mid-20th century due to rural depopulation.
Economy Historically, the economy was based on agriculture and livestock farming (particularly cattle and sheep). In recent decades, rural tourism has become a relevant economic activity, driven by the natural environment, hiking trails, and the proximity to the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park.
Culture and Heritage The parish church of Santa Maria de Gisclareny is the main architectural landmark. It is a Romanesque building dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, though it has undergone subsequent modifications. The municipality celebrates its annual festival (Festa Major) around the feast day of Saint Mary (August 15).
Administrative Division Gisclareny is part of the judicial district of Berga. It borders the municipalities of Bagà, Guardia de Berguedà, La Nou de Berguedà, and the French department of Ariège (via the Pyrenean border).
