Giovanni Battista Zanchi (1515–1586) was an Italian military engineer and author, known for his influential treatise on defensive fortifications.
Life
Born in Pesaro in 1515 into a family originally from Bergamo, Zanchi pursued a military career. He served as a captain leading 12,000 infantrymen and 500 knights for Ottavio Farnese, Duke of Parma, during the war against Protestants in Germany. After returning home with honors, he fought in the Siege of Siena under Marcantonio Colonna. In 1561, he was recruited to Cyprus, where he served as an engineer with a salary of 50 ducats per month.
Work
Zanchi wrote an influential treatise on the defensive fortification of cities, titled Del modo di fortificar le città (On the Method of Fortifying Cities), published in Venice in 1554 by Plinio Pietrasanta. The text was subsequently translated and republished in France (by François de la Treille) and in England (by Peter Whitehorne), contributing to the dissemination of Italian Renaissance military engineering techniques across Europe.
Legacy
Zanchi is recognized as a notable figure in 16th-century military engineering, and his writings are cited in studies of Renaissance warfare and fortification theory.
