Gino Torretta (born March 7, 1970) is an American former college football quarterback, sports analyst, and television personality. He gained prominence playing for the University of Miami Hurricanes, where he led the team to a national championship in 1991 and won the Heisman Trophy in 1992, recognizing him as the most outstanding player in NCAA Division I football.
Early life and education
Torretta was born in Miami, Florida. He attended Miami Palmetto Senior High School, where he excelled in football and was recruited by several collegiate programs before committing to the University of Miami.
College career
At Miami (1990–1992), Torretta served as the starting quarterback for three seasons. He guided the Hurricanes to a 31–5 record, culminating in a victory over the University of Washington in the 1992 Orange Bowl, which secured the 1991 national championship. In his senior year, Torretta completed 226 of 393 passes for 2,850 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, earning the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award, and the Walter Camp Award. He was also a two-time All-American selection.
Professional career
After college, Torretta was selected in the 11th round (293rd overall) of the 1993 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. He did not appear in a regular-season NFL game and subsequently played in the World League of American Football (WLAF) for the Barcelona Dragons in 1995. He also had brief stints with the San Antonio Texans of the Canadian Football League and the Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football League.
Post‑playing career
Following his playing career, Torretta transitioned to sports media. He has worked as a football analyst for ESPN and contributed to ESPN Radio and ESPN's college football coverage.
